El 1 de octubre de 2025, a las 10:00 horas, el portaaviones nuclear USS George Washington (CVN-73) de la Armada de Estados Unidos zarpó desde su base naval en Yokosuka, Japón, para reiniciar sus patrullas en el océano Pacífico. Actualmente, es el único portaaviones estadounidense en servicio activo en la región del Indo-Pacífico.
En la primera fase de su despliegue, el portaaviones junto al Ala Aérea Embarcada 5 (Carrier Air Wing 5, CVW-5) llevará a cabo ejercicios de calificación de aterrizaje de aeronaves de ala fija en aguas próximas a la isla japonesa de Kyushu, previstos hasta el 5 de octubre.
La salida del buque se produce tras una pausa operativa programada, que se enmarca en los ciclos de mantenimiento posteriores al extenso proceso de Reabastecimiento Complejo y Revisión (Refueling Complex Overhaul, RCOH) finalizado en 2023 en los astilleros Newport News Shipbuilding en Virginia. Este procedimiento, que incluyó el recambio de combustible nuclear y una modernización general del portaaviones, se prolongó durante casi seis años debido a desafíos logísticos, técnicos y a los retrasos derivados de la pandemia de COVID-19. Luego de esa revisión, el portaaviones regresó progresivamente al servicio activo en 2024.
Según la Armada estadounidense, la detención más reciente, entre finales de agosto y septiembre de 2025, correspondió a un período de mantenimiento rutinario y reparaciones menores planificadas en puerto, antes de retomar las operaciones de patrulla en la región.
Este despliegue se enmarca en la estrategia de presencia adelantada (forward presence) de la Armada de Estados Unidos en el Indo-Pacífico, para reforzar la capacidad de disuasión naval en un entorno de creciente competencia estratégica.
