El 2 de octubre de 2025, la Armada alemana recibió oficialmente en Seattle, Estados Unidos, el primero de los ocho aviones de patrulla marítima y guerra antisubmarina Boeing P-8A Poseidon, adquiridos para sustituir la flota de P-3C Orion en servicio. El anuncio fue realizado por el vicealmirante Jan Christian Kaack, jefe del Estado Mayor de la Armada, quien destacó que la nueva aeronave fortalecerá la capacidad alemana de detección y combate de submarinos enemigos, especialmente en las zonas del Mar del Norte y el Báltico.
La decisión de compra fue tomada en 2021, con un pedido inicial de cinco unidades por un total de 1.100 millones de euros. La incorporación del Poseidon se produce en un contexto de crecientes tensiones en el Mar Báltico, donde la OTAN ha incrementado la vigilancia ante las operaciones marítimas rusas, incluido el tránsito de buques militares y la denominada “flota en la sombra”, empleada por Moscú para eludir sanciones mediante el uso de petroleros antiguos. Kaack describió al P-8A como un “guardián volador” y subrayó que su introducción representa un avance sustancial en alcance, sensores y autonomía operativa para la aviación naval alemana.
