El 30 de septiembre de 2025, la Administración de Adquisiciones de Defensa de Corea del Sur (DAPA) seleccionó a L3Harris Technologies como principal empresa integradora de una aeronave de alerta temprana y control aéreo (AEW&C, por sus siglas en inglés de Airborne Early Warning and Control). La firma del contrato se espera para noviembre de 2025.
Este contrato es parte del programa Phoenix, que cuenta con un presupuesto de USD 2.200 millones y cuya finalización está prevista para 2032. Este programa contempla la incorporación de tres aeronaves con capacidades AEW&C, la primera integrada por L3Harris y las otras dos por Korean Air. La actividad de integración comprende el ensamblaje estructural de la aeronave base, la instalación y conexión de los sistemas de misión —radar, aviónica, enlace de datos, comunicaciones, guerra electrónica y control de mando—, así como las pruebas de compatibilidad y calibración que aseguran el funcionamiento coordinado de todos los subsistemas dentro de una única plataforma operativa.
El sistema AEW&C se montará sobre el fuselaje del modelo Global 6500 de Bombardier, una plataforma con un techo de servicio superior a los 15.000 metros, una autonomía de vuelo estimada de 12 horas y un alcance de más de 11.000 km. La aeronave será equipada con radares ELW-2085 desarrollados por Elta Systems (Israel Aerospace Industries), un sistema activo de exploración electrónica (AESA) con antenas distribuidas en cuatro carenados que brindan cobertura de 360°, capaces de detectar blancos aéreos a distancias superiores a los 450 km, incluyendo aeronaves furtivas, misiles de crucero y drones de baja firma.
El radar estará complementado por un sistema de identificación amigo-enemigo (IFF) integrado, receptores de inteligencia electrónica (ELINT/ESM) y enlaces de datos de alta capacidad que permitirán la transmisión en tiempo real de la información táctica al centro de mando y a los cazas interceptores. Además, el avión contará con consolas multifunción para operadores, sistemas redundantes de comunicaciones seguras (en VHF/UHF y satelital), y equipos de autoprotección con alertadores de radar (RWR), dispensadores de contramedidas (chaff / flare) y sistemas de guerra electrónica defensiva.
Por su parte, Korean Air liderará la fabricación de las dos aeronaves restantes y el mantenimiento y soporte técnico local, en cooperación con LIG Nex1 y Ace Antenna, encargadas de la integración de los módulos de comunicaciones y de los sistemas de antenas.
Se espera que el conjunto permita a la Fuerza Aérea de la República de Corea (ROKAF) sostener operaciones de alerta temprana, vigilancia aérea y control de interceptores, incrementando la cobertura radar y la capacidad de comando y control sobre todo el espacio aéreo nacional y sus zonas marítimas adyacentes.
La selección de L3Harris se basó en la idoneidad operacional, menores costos de operación y la cooperación con empresas locales, superando a Boeing con su E-7A y a Saab con el GlobalEye. El ROKAF ya opera cuatro E-737 Peace Eye, entregados en 2011-2012, pero optó por no adquirir la versión E-7A. La empresa asegura una disponibilidad operativa superior al 95%.
