El 30 de octubre, la Oficina de Capacidades Rápidas y Tecnologías Críticas del Ejército de los Estados Unidos publicó una solicitud de información dirigida a la industria privada para el desarrollo de sistemas láser de alta energía. El requerimiento forma parte del programa denominado Enduring High Energy Laser (E-HEL), que busca una capacidad flexible y sostenible para enfrentar enjambres de drones de reconocimiento y ataque. Estas aeronaves incluyen desde microdrones del tamaño del Wasp III hasta modelos más grandes como el RQ-7B Shadow, empleados en misiones de inteligencia, vigilancia y ataque suicida.
El diseño previsto contempla que el sistema E-HEL pueda instalarse sobre vehículos tácticos ligeros conjuntos (JLTV) para su empleo tanto en defensa móvil como en posiciones semifijas. Entre los requerimientos técnicos se incluyen capacidades de detección y seguimiento en condiciones atmosféricas variables, respuesta rápida y destrucción completa del objetivo mediante la pérdida total de sustentación.
La Oficina de Capacidades Rápidas y Tecnologías Críticas desarrolló prototipos de armas láser en los últimos cinco años, en un esfuerzo sostenido por mejorar la defensa aérea de corto alcance. La publicación de esta solicitud coincide con la intención del Ejército de lanzar una licitación formal en 2026
