El 8 de octubre de 2025, los gobiernos de India y el Reino Unido firmaron una serie de acuerdos de cooperación en materia de defensa y desarrollo industrial, durante la visita oficial del primer ministro británico Keir Starmer a Nueva Delhi. Entre los convenios se incluye un contrato de 350 millones de libras esterlinas (aproximadamente 468 millones de dólares) para el suministro al ejército indio de misiles multipropósito ligeros, fabricados en Irlanda del Norte.
Además, ambas partes rubricaron la siguiente fase de un acuerdo de 250 millones de libras para la colaboración en el desarrollo de motores eléctricos destinados a buques de guerra, como parte de los programas de innovación naval de la Marina India. El Ministerio de Defensa británico indicó que estos proyectos refuerzan la cooperación tecnológica bilateral y consolidan la relación de defensa en el Indo-Pacífico.
Durante la visita, Starmer subrayó que Londres respeta la independencia estratégica de la India, pese a las diferencias en política exterior respecto de Rusia y Ucrania. El secretario escocés Douglas Alexander, integrante de la delegación, señaló que estas divergencias no afectan los intereses comunes ni el objetivo de fortalecer la relación económica y de seguridad entre ambos países.
De forma complementaria, el Reino Unido anunció que dos universidades británicas obtuvieron autorización para abrir campus en territorio indio, con el propósito de ampliar la presencia académica del Reino Unido sin incrementar los flujos migratorios.
La cooperación militar entre India y Reino Unido se enmarca en la estrategia india de diversificación de proveedores de defensa, tras décadas de dependencia de material ruso, y en la política británica de proyección industrial y tecnológica en Asia, en un contexto de competencia global por mercados estratégicos.
