El 29 de septiembre de 2025, el ministro de Defensa de Japón, Gen Nakatani, y presidente de la República Democrática Socialista de Sri Lanka, Anura Kumara Disanayaka, se reunieron en la ciudad de Tokio. Durante el encuentro, ambas partes destacaron los avances alcanzados en la cooperación en materia de defensa desde la firma del Memorando sobre Cooperación y Canjes de Defensa de 2019.
El ministro Nakatani subrayó la necesidad de continuar trabajando bajo el concepto “One Cooperative Effort Among Nations: Perspective for the Indo-Pacific (OCEAN)”, presentado en el Diálogo de Shangri-La realizado el 30 de mayo y 1 de junio de 2025 en Singapur.
Tanto Nakatani como Disanayaka coincidieron en que el fortalecimiento de la cooperación bilateral, incluyendo el ámbito de la defensa, “resulta esencial para la paz y estabilidad del Indo-Pacífico, considerando el entorno de seguridad regional y global cada vez más complejo e imprevisible”.
Finalmente, el ministro Nakatani expresó la intención de Japón de continuar implementando actividades de cooperación entre unidades y programas de intercambio de personal, tal como se acordó con el viceministro de Defensa Jayasekara durante su visita a Sri Lanka en mayo. Ambas partes acordaron seguir desarrollando los vínculos y los intercambios en defensa.
