El 3 de octubre de 2025, en los astilleros de Navantia en Cartagena, la Armada Española realizó la botadura del submarino S-82 “Narciso Monturiol”, segundo de la serie S-80. El acto fue presidido por la ministra de defensa, Margarita Robles. Participaron también el almirante jefe del estado mayor de la armada (AJEMA), almirante general Antonio Piñeiro, y diversas autoridades institucionales, políticas y empresariales.
El submarino “Narciso Monturiol” forma parte del programa S-80, diseñado y construido por Navantia, cuyo objetivo es dotar a la Armada de una nueva generación de submarinos de propulsión independiente del aire (AIP). Según la ministra Robles, este buque representa para España “un avance tecnológico significativo en materia de sigilo, autonomía y capacidad operativa, reforzando el potencial disuasorio de las fuerzas navales españolas”.
Durante la ceremonia, el AJEMA destacó el papel estratégico del arma submarina dentro del poder naval, señalando que “el submarino es el elemento disuasorio por excelencia: discreto y letal. Su sola presencia contribuye al control del mar y a negar al oponente su libertad de maniobra”.
Cerrando el acto, la ministra de Defensa subrayó el valor del programa S-80 como un proyecto de continuidad y desarrollo industrial, afirmando que representa “un camino de éxito, trabajo y progreso para engrandecer a la Armada, a Cartagena, a la región de Murcia y a España”. El submarino lleva el nombre de Narciso Monturiol Estarriol (1819–1885), ingeniero e inventor pionero de la navegación submarina, reconocido junto a Cosme García Sáez e Isaac Peral por sus aportes a la historia naval mundial.
