El 31 de octubre de 2025, el Ministerio de Defensa de España encargó a la empresa estatal Navantia el diseño y desarrollo de un nuevo buque de inteligencia electrónica (SIGINT/ELINT), con un presupuesto total de 242 millones de euros. La inversión inicial de 14 millones se destinará a la fase de definición técnica del proyecto, que sustituirá al histórico buque Alerta, en servicio desde la década de 1970.
El nuevo buque, cuya entrada en servicio operativo está prevista para 2031, se construirá sobre la plataforma de los Buques de Acción Marítima (BAM), aunque su función será distinta: no realizará patrullas navales sino interceptación, análisis y transmisión de información electromagnética. Se prevé que su puesta en servicio refuerce las capacidades de inteligencia naval de España dentro de la Organización del Tratado del Atlántico Norte (OTAN).
Con un desplazamiento de aproximadamente 3.000 toneladas y una eslora de 94 metros, la unidad estará equipada con sensores capaces de captar señales entre 1 y 40 GHz, sistemas de procesamiento de datos en tiempo real y una integración completa con la nube de combate de la Armada. Además, dispondrá de capacidad para operar drones de vigilancia y funcionará como un nodo flotante de ciberdefensa, lo que incrementará su autonomía y capacidad de respuesta frente a amenazas híbridas.
El programa, que involucra a Navantia y a un consorcio de empresas españolas especializadas en software, comunicaciones seguras y guerra electrónica, generará empleo de alta especialización y consolidará la posición de España como referente tecnológico en el flanco sur de la OTAN. El buque reemplazará así al veterano Alerta, que sirvió como plataforma principal de inteligencia marítima durante más de cinco décadas.
